Yes, We often hear them !
I was setting Permalinks for my Blog and I thought why my readers should stay behind? And thought to write and let’em know
What are Permalinks?
Permanent Links often known as Permalinks are the direct links to your Article or Post. By default Wordpress Permalinks look somehow like this “yourwebsitename.com/?p=213, Where 213 is the id of your Post. And these are commonly known as Ugly Permalinks, & Yes they are! Reader cannot understand your link very easily.
Here I will tell you What are Permalinks and How to use them?
Lets say My Post “What are Permalinks?” is listed on Google Search, the reader will see the link under the result as http://www.Chidimar.com/?p=213 (This is not the real link) and the Permalinks I’m actually using (Pretty Permalinks) will show the link somehow like this http://www.Chidimar.com/permalinks/ . So which one will you prefer? Yes you can make it even better like Chidimar.com/What-are-permalinks? or Chidimar.com/What-are-permalinks.html – Though blogs do not create separate .html pages in the directory for your post but just for the reader to think its a real page.
You can set your permalinks from http://www.yoursitename.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php
Some common and usefull tags you can write in Custom Structure are:
- %year%
- The year of the post, four digits, for example 2004
- %monthnum%
- Month of the year, for example 05
- %day%
- Day of the month, for example 28
- %hour%
- Hour of the day, for example 15
- %minute%
- Minute of the hour, for example 43
- %second%
- Second of the minute, for example 33
- %postname%
- A sanitized version of the title of the post (post slug field on Edit Post/Page panel). So “This Is A Great Post!” becomes this-is-a-great-post in the URI (see Using only %postname%)
- %post_id%
- The unique ID # of the post, for example 423
- %category%
- A sanitized version of the category name (category slug field on New/Edit Category panel). Nested sub-categories appear as nested directories in the URI.
- %tag%
- A sanitized version of the tag name (tag slug field on New/Edit Tag panel).
- %author%
- A sanitized version of the author name.
Wordpress itself has described permalinks very neatly on: Using Permalinks.
Have I missed any Point? or You also want to share any tip about Permalinks ? Feel free to Comment. ![]()

Nicely explained. Maybe you should include a post how to avoid losing PR when changing permalinks. Any plugins to be use or some tips? Thanks!
