WordPress as a Blog Website

Well, the reason I love WordPress is the three step Posting. Write Article, Tag it and Press the Publish Button. Isn’t that easy? Designing, Coding and Maintaining a Website from scratch is a real mess. So for another of my Project instead of designing something from scratch I just thought to use a WordPress Theme and tune the WordPress so it looks like a Website instead of a Blog. So it becomes easy to manage later on.. Write, Tag it and Publish.

And, if its real Good why not share it with my readers Friends ? Don’t worry if you are not really a designer/coder and just a Blogger. You can still read down well to know how I tuned the WordPress to work as a Website, as its explain so well (maybe) that even newbees can understand and do it.

Ingredients:

  • Ex-clude Pages Plugin
  • Custom Page Template (If required)
  • Custom Sidebar (If required)
  • A little knowledge of php and xhtml (not really)

The Exclude Pages Plugin:

What does this do?

As you are actually making a Website instead of Blog. Your WordPress is going to rush with tons of written Pages, etc. Obviously you’d not like to show them all on your Navigation Bar (at the top mostly). This Plugin helps you show only the selected Pages on your Navigation Bar.

How does this work ?

Written by Simon Weatley. This plugin adds a checkbox, “include this page in menus”, which is checked by default. If you uncheck it, the page will not appear in any listings of pages (which includes, and is usually limited to, your page navigation menus).

Plugin Page: Exclude Pages

Custom Page Template:

What does this do?

Its not really required. Like the new Magagazine Themes have pre-installed Custom Page Template. Well it helps to create your own kinda Page different from other WordPress default Pages, Upload and Go !

How does this work ?

For this you do require a little html and php. Geese! You must know these if you are a Web Designer !?

Custom Sidebar:

Well, if you want to show different navigation or widgets on some pages, on sidebars. You need to create some of your own. Don’t worry they are totally widgetized.

How does this work ?

For this you again require a little html and php. Okay okay ! If you don’t know, We’re here to help. :D

Conclusion:

You now know how to create custom pages and sidebars. You also no how NOT to include all of the written pages in navigation bar. Once you setup all these plugins and templates. Its easy for you to manage and write your Website now. You don’t have to open your Dreamweaver again and again to write content or update your website. WordPress is there to help, at least We are ! :)

Finally:

Do you think I’m wrong at some step or I need to add something I’m missing. Just some suggestions ? Need help Optimizing your WordPress as a Website? Just comment ! :)
