For those who don’t know already,
What is Top Commentator Widget Plugin:
This Plugin adds a widget to Sidebar which shows Top Commentators of your Blog. People use it to gain comments. Visitors who want to get a link back or a free traffic Comment on Blog shavinv this Widget to get on main page, a link back or some free traffic. You can select between NoFollow and DoFollow links from the widget options though.
I hope you have figured out from the title, what I’m trying to say today. In Past months, I’ve observed Top Commentator has been heavily abused in new Blogs. Its not used as it should be.
Specially for new blogs who want to gain comments through this. People like Comment Spammer and Link Building Spammers via Comments come on New, Fresh and Empty Blogs only on Month startups to grab the position in Top Commentators Widget on Top. They come often first week to stay on top and see if they have their place. And then they just vanish till the new month starts. Its because they already know this Blog is fresh or new and no one gonna come more over soon and very less percentage from the total is really going to write any comments.
It works great if you already have a good readership and comment traffic. But I think Top Commentator is not working the way it was or it should.
What are your views about it ?

Well, this is nothing new and I guess it will continue to go this way as long as it works. What you have to think about is that search engines does not give much value from a link in the sidebar on a new blog.
With that said it is a easy method to get plenty of backlinks for sites that otherwise wouldn’t get backlinks.

One could also set it up so that the top commenators plugin is based on the past 30 days and doesn’t reset on every new month. Will of course still be a problem if the spammers just hit it hard every 28 days or so.

If I’m honest, I hadn’t really thought about it, but now I do, it’s a really good point! That said, for the blog owner at least I think it’s still beneficial as it means people are still visiting, even if it means they just leave a load of comments then leave again.

Well Simon, for Blog owner to know if people are still visiting or not He has Cpanel AwStats, WP Wassup or Stat Press Plugin or the very best Google Analytics.
Though, everybody has its own views about everything. I take TC Plugin is not as useful as before, for new Blogs.

Yeah, but I didn’t mean for the blog owner to see his traffic. I meant, it shows that people are actually READING AND APPRECIATING the posts rather than just clicking on his website!
Plus, it makes your website look more active which makes it look professional!

Top Commentators plugin works only when you have dedicated fans and reader for your blog.
Its better to have recent comments instead

Actually that plugin or the concept of top commentator, what I feel, is basically to engage the readers that they could be on the first page or on the sidebar and let others know that these people are expressive and have some views that they could share. But the meanings now are totally changed, even for everyone, SEO is now becoming cat mouse race, and every link is put to build a backlink and it is becoming a give and take business. I just agree to the point that new bloggers need to be very hardworking, intelligent to reset the top commentators counter and people blogging over the globe should have some views as blogging actually means that you wish to share something with the world and not just go on collecting backlinks!

top commentator plugin to your blog is very useful if you have a lot more visitors and readers, but i recommend you that use the recent comment if you feel that top commentator is abusing by some blogger

I say one plugin that made a tickbox that the poster had to tick… it said something like “I confirm that my post is not spam”

The plugin is yes… not for new pages, but if you have comments and commentators, then it could be very good
