It helps you stop the Search Engine crawler to scan Tags, Categories and/or archives pages. If Search Engine crawls these pages too as well as your Blog Posts.. obviously your single Post will be crawled a couple of times instead of only once. Which creates content / keyword flooding.
Search Engines hate repetetion of content.
